Dango in a Gorge

An outing to Genbikei Gorge

The dangos are put in boxes and the order comes with green tea. It's awesome to think that the basket goes back down at quite a speed and yet not a drop of liquid is spilled!

The chef is a terrific guy! People shouted out the name of their country and their national flags were put on display. As if that wasn't enough, their anthem was played as the dumplings came down the ropeway.

Delicious dangos, and only 400 yen! This comes with green tea.

The last order for the day. To the left is the basket where you deposit your money for the dumplings.

While I highly recommend getting the dumplings as they are "flown" to you, you should also visit the building where it is cooked. You can also sit and eat here.

My friends and I sent back the teapots with a thank you note :)

After you put your money in the basket, you hit the wooden plank 3 times and the chef pulls up the basket with the order.

We took a leisurely stroll through the Sahara Glass Park

I love how the lights in the park looked like the glass being blown

There are cute gardens in the park and in keeping with the theme, even the lights looked like glass being blown

There is a cafe that sells gelato in a triangular cone. I got the mango

So captivating is the beauty of Genbikei Gorge that it is said that even Date Masamune (the feudal lord of the Sendai domain) himself acknowledged its beauty and often frequented this spot.

The gorge is a geological treasure and quite a sight. The water flowing along the Iwai River is an amazing turquoise. One of the highlights is the "kakkou dango" or "flying dumplings". They are quite tasty and I highly recommend you try them.

You can even venture up to the tea house and see the operations with your own eyes.

Ichinoseki can be accessed from Sendai Station on Platform 1, with a transfer at Kogota Station. From Ichinoseki Station, there is a bus that goes directly to the gorge at a cost of 490 yen.

The dango were surprisingly filling! One box per person might be too much for some people. They weren't the best dango I've ever had, but completely worth it for the novelty! Great customer service.

@Laura they were pretty tasty, but even better than the dango was meeting the cook and operating the pulley. He lets you send down the dangos. That was a lot of fun!

Haha, this is so neat! Reminds me of the pulley systems they used to ship onsen-tamago up and down mountains, except you eat right out of the basket from this one!
